We're baaaacccckkk...

Josh and I had a great trip to good ol' Port Neches this weekend! I took Monday off so it could be a little longer. We started off the trip with a bang by driving through the monsoon in Houston...it pretty much followed us from SA. (We had a tornado warning at my school!) On Saturday we had Grandpa's 80th birthday party, then the men went to the casino in Lake Charles while the girls went to see the Back-up Plan. (funny but awkward) Sunday was a lazy day, followed by BBQ crabs at Sartin's. Josh went fishing with Uncle Greg and Paw Paw, while we went walking at the track. Yesterday we drove home and then I helped with a baby shower for a friend in Bible Study. Overall a fun and successful weekend!

How was your weekend?

p.s. Happy 2 year anniversary shout-out to Mr. and Mrs. Dalton! Best Texas wedding I have ever been to ;)

Staff Dinner Turkish Style

Tonight Josh and I went to dinner at Turquoise, a cozy little Turkish restaurant here in SA. The food was very similar to what we had in Turkey! Strangely we kind of missed it! They had hummus and bread too. I attached a picture of what Josh ordered. It's called Iskender Kebab. I think it has bread at the bottom, kebab, a tomatoe sauce and the white blobs are yogurt. Sounds weird but it's actually good!

Positive notes this week: Josh only has 2 more finals, we're going to PN on Friday, seeing family, Grandpa Joe's 80th birthday, taking Monday OFF, AND having an 8th grader in tutoring tell me I'm the first teacher that's helped him ACTUALLY get IT (math).

May Love

This weekend was another busy one! After a looooonnngggg TAKS week and finishing up a teacher cert book study, I got to see those handsome Oler boys. They are such cuties...I've never heard them cry. Cyrus fell asleep while I was holding them. Such a treat! We went to dinner at the original Rudy's with Sheena and Scott in Leon Springs. Yum!

Saturday:
One of my final region 20 Saturday Sessions! Hearing the details of how many people in the program still looking for a job made me thankful. I got home around noon and my awesome husband had started on our MOUNTAIN of laundry. Whew. We got it all done but 1 load. Our friend Devin came in town with Erica. We went to the Riverwalk and to a new place called the Yard House.

Sunday:
Josh and I went to Mission Church for the 3rd time and we really love it. Devin took Erica to the zoo, while Josh helped me fold laundry. We went to dinner before they left. For dessert we went to our new Pastor's house! We really enjoyed their fellowship. Just another reason to love this Church. Josh and I both discussed how quickly this whole process of joining a church has been and what God has revealed to us. Everything happens for a reason, His reason!

On a side note we've found a new rent home and will be moving in the end of May. Josh starts finals on Friday so please send prayers his way. We both really miss our families. I haven't seen mine since Easter and haven't been to PN since January! Josh saw his parents for the maroon and white game, but we haven't been to Midlo since the end of January. Crazy how this semester has flown by. Visiting people is at the top of our summer to-do list.

Currently listening to Chris Tomlin's Indescribable "You see the depths of our heart's and you love us the same...you are amazing God."

My NOT post and exciting news!

So since I promised a friend that I would write my NOT post, here it goes! (cue my most sarcastic voice)

-I am NOT dreading TAKS next week.
-I definitely am NOT wishing we could find Brody a new home.
-Baby fever? Nope, I do NOT have to fight off that.
and lastly, I am NOT dreading our upcoming move.

Well that's all I can think of for now, I'll put some more thought into the next one ;) Last night we met two handsome little dudes, Presley and Cyrus Oler. Presley weighed 6 lb 13 oz and was born at 3:25. Cyrus came 4 minutes later and weighed 6 lb 12 oz. Both are little blondies and have their own distinct facial features. Their Mom and Dad are doing well and beaming with joy. We can't wait to see them again!

And it looks like I won't be dying my hair rainbow after all...6 out of 29 8th graders failed the math TAKS. I'm still really proud of them. Maybe I will think of something else to reward them...thoughts?

Wow, I'm a post slacker

So, in honor of the 8th grade TAKS Math being this past Tuesday, I've decided to post some of my favorite stories from my classroom:

  1. Calling a student "Hoey" - a mix of Jose and Joey
  2. Explaining to my students that Pi never ends, and a student raising their hand saying "Miss, Chuck Norris knows the last number of Pi"
  3. An ESL student sooo eager to say the answer, which was parallelogram. He said "parayeyogram," saying the double l properly in Spanish.
  4. Being asked if I had grandkids "yet"
  5. A student telling me she is Mexican and asking me if I am "country." (like it's an ethnicity)
  6. Reading a word problem with a list of exotic animals and coming to the word "male gorilla"...I read it to them as the "Mah-lei gorilla". A student gently brought it to my attention that it said male, as in gender.

I've decided that this list will be recurring so that I will never forget the funny moments in my classroom ;)

On another note, my 8th graders asked me what I would do if they all passed. (there are 11 of them) Here are all of the options they gave me:

  • get a tattoo that said 8A
  • buy them breakfast every Friday
  • make Math class a "free period" until school ends
  • dye my hair rainbow

Somehow, I settled on the last option. We shall see in the middle of May...I might be rocking a new do. I'll be pretty darn proud to do so.

Last minute updates:

  • We had a blast in Turkey, pictures and stories to come soon.
  • Josh's Mom graciously helped us finish our 1st time to do taxes...we're officially big kids!
  • Our friends Lindsay and Paul will be having their twins any day now!
  • Josh only has 2 more test rounds for his 1st year of med school. He will be doing a paid summer research opportunity in orthopedics!
  • 3rd, 4th, 6th, & 7th graders take their TAKS Math April 27.
  • We're looking for a new place to live.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! I promise to update sooner ;)

Happy 1st Married Valentine's Day!

Josh and I had a great weekend! We definitely needed it after the week we had. Josh was in exams which meant 6 tests over 8 days. Whew what a relief it is for him to be done with that module. I had a pretty busy week at work. Found out Monday that I needed to have a teacher folder ready by Friday when a man from our central office would be there to observe me. It pretty much needed to have everything in it. (grades, TAKS stuff, a copy of every worksheet I've ever given out, a copy of one of those assignments graded, calendars...ugh wish I would have known that in September?!?!?!) I managed OK and even found time to help out the 4th and 5th grade math teacher who is Turkish.

Monday: the girls went to dinner for Alyse's birthday at Nicha's Mexican food and had a mini cupcake from Kate's Frosting. (both definitely worth trying) When I got home that night, I was in the kitchen when I heard strange popping above me in our fluorescent light bulb. Apparently the ballast in it was faulty. It smelled awful and honestly made me think our house was on fire! Turns out it just needs to be replaced, but I am very thankful to have my father-in-law Ronnie, who is a Battalion chief at DeSoto FD, to come to my rescue!

Tuesday: I brought Josh and Jose dinner at school. (forgot utensils :P so they had to get creative) I went to the gym to workout, shower, and head to a fellow SST-D teacher's house for a visit! Stephanie is our art teacher who has the most precious 4 year old, Jacques Henri. We had fun. When we got home that night, I discovered that a realtor had left our house unlocked...grrrr.

Wednesday: Josh studied at home! I think my french dip sandwiches in the crockpot had something to do with that. He loved them!

Thursday: Very fun day! Bible Study was at my house. I served chocolates and strawberries, and made some crackers from a recipe that Alyse gave me.

Friday: OBSERVATION DAY! I was a nervous wreck all day because my principal couldn't tell me what time the guy would be there. Josh and I went to lunch at Jason's Deli, yum, but my nerves wouldn't let me eat much. There was a Valentine's day potluck in the teacher's lounge, but I decided to spend some time with Josh instead. The man showed up to observe me LAST period! 7A - a very chatty, low motivation group... not one of my good advanced classes. I also have them after their PE class. I just knew this was a recipe for disaster. BUT they were actually very good! They were into the lesson, eager to answer questions...definitely blew me away! The only problem was the observer was dozing off in the back of my classroom! lol the kids kept turning around and laughing...one in particular tried really hard to whisper to me "MISS he's asleep" It honestly was just icing on the cake to my week. When I was facing the board away from the kids, I had myself a little chuckle about it. My VP even came in to make an announcement, and the observer stayed in the back of the room with his eyes closed. WOW. He ended up giving me a good review, probably made the stuff up. Oh well. I was really proud of 7A and also excited about the Vday gifts from my students...one gave me a Kate's frosting cupcake! My family showed up after school and finally got to see where I work. We went to Little Italy for dinner...yum.

Saturday: Region 20 in the morning...ugh. Josh and dad had golf lessons and played La Cantera all day. I came home around noon, with Diet coke in hand for my addict...I mean sister lol. My mom was cleaning up a storm! Our house is spotless. Alyse came by for a visit which was really fun. That night we went to dinner at Roaring Fork and had an awesome meal.

NO I'm not going to write a novel each week, just wanted to share how busy it was for us! Today we said goodbye to our house guests this morning, went to the mall and batting cages and ate leftovers. We watched the Time Travelers wife...and were a bit disappointed. Hope everyone had a happy heart day!

Love,
Ashley & Josh
